Internships
We are not accepting internship applications at this time. Please check back for updates!
Primary Stages interns form a core of support in all areas of the company's operations, gaining experience in their chosen department while receiving college credit from their institution, free tickets to all of Primary Stages' productions, mentorship seminars with senior staff, and free or reduced priced registration for Primary Stages ESPA classes. Our internship program offers the opportunity to develop practical skills while creating relationships with artists and administrators at one of New York City's preeminent Off-Broadway theaters.
Positions are offered in the following departments:
ARTISTIC: Interns assist the artistic department with current production needs, in-house readings, casting, and correspondence with artists. They attend readings and productions in New York City, as well as observe sessions of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer's Group, Primary Stages' group of emerging playwrights who meet weekly to create original plays.
COMPANY MANAGEMENT: The Company and Production Management Intern works behind the scenes with our general management and the production teams. The intern will work with the Company Manager by assisting with cast and crew in rehearsal, coordinating ticket requests, preparing weekly payroll, maintaining accurate files, reviewing invoices, ensuring timely submission of all vendor payments, and assisting at the theater during tech and previews. Additionally, the intern will work with the Production Manager in preparing for load-in and tech, and providing support during load-in and tech. Some evening hours may be required and the availability of a flexible schedule, especially during pre-production and tech, is desired.
DEVELOPMENT & SPECIAL EVENTS: Interns learn about all aspects of the fundraising process, including prospect research, donor cultivation, proposal writing, and stewardship. Tasks include assisting with event planning, reviewing daily and weekly publications for prospects, providing ticketing assistance to patrons, writing acknowledgment letters, and other projects as they arise. Interns will act as members of the Development Team, attending weekly departmental and bi-weekly staff meetings. Candidates must have a sincere interest in theater fundraising.
EDUCATION & ESPA: Interns assist the Education Department with both their access and outreach programs–including the Free Student Matinees and Echoes Writers Group–and the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), Primary Stages’ school for emerging and established writers, actors, and directors. They work with the staff on the administration of these programs, as well as ESPA’s short term planning, student relations, marketing, and the line producing of extracurricular programming. An interest in theater education is encouraged and previous stage management experience is helpful but not required.
MARKETING: Interns work closely with the marketing and communications department in both daily operations and long term projects. Interns assist the department with social media development, eblasts, research, outreach, special events, press, audience development, media campaigns, archiving, and various forms of internet marketing and strategizing.
