Cherry Lane Theatre

A true Greenwich Village cultural landmark, the box factory at 38 Commerce Street became the Cherry Lane Playhouse in 1924. Since then, it has hosted innumerable greats: from historic luminaries F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, T.S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein to 20th-century giants Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Amiri Baraka, Sam Shepard, and Lanford Wilson. The Downtown Theater movement, The Living Theatre, and Theatre of the Absurd all took root on its boards. The artistic community has produced daring and relevant performances at Cherry Lane for over 90 seasons. Our non-profit was founded in 1997 with the mission to cultivate an urban artist colony, honor our groundbreaking history, and engage audiences as partners in creating theater that illuminates contemporary issues, and at its best, transforms the spirit.
