Rewriting a play can be a dizzying, daunting task. This class is designed to help you hold on to the things that first excited you enough to start writing your play, while also using the tools of craft to organize it into a script you're truly satisfied with – and can submit to theaters. Open to new and returning students located anywhere in the world, this class will be a combination of full class sessions and individual meetings with Nikkole, interacting with your instructor and classmates live via Zoom.

About Nikkole's Classroom: Nikkole's class will provide a platform for learning through collective analysis, concept building, and individual writing. She isn't a teacher as much as a facilitator for the exploration of knowledge about dramatic writing. She will encourage you to participate – not just by doing what she prescribes, but by offering what you know, by asserting what you want to know, and by actively taking the reins of your own development. She will not teach you how to write the right way (or how to write at all!), but rather help you become the writer you want to be and facilitate an environment in which you can grow yourself.
Nikkole is typically intentionally socially-driven and realistic in the writing of her work – however, she believes in using form to support the story trying to be told. For example, her most recent play uses magical realism because the sub-conscious is a large part of the conversation about implicit bias, the play's main topic. She doesn't let the style dictate the story. She lets the story dictate the style.

About the online platform for this class:
Zoom Meeting is easy to start, join, and use to collaborate online in a personable way via desktop or mobile without complicated set-ups. The Zoom Meeting Host (your ESPA instructor or administrator) sends out a meeting link and at the time of your class, you just click the link to launch the virtual classroom via your web browser. In the Zoom Meeting, each participant can share their webcam so that you're not only hearing your instructor and classmates but seeing them too, making it feel similar to being in one of the studios at ESPA. Other exciting collaborative Zoom features include Breakout Rooms in which students can meet in smaller groups, "Raise Your Hand" feature to better facilitate balanced conversation, Video Sharing, and File Transfer for your assignments. If you can't log in via a computer, there are also options to phone into the meeting so you can still participate in the class even if you find yourself without computer or internet access. And Zoom has an Apple and Android app, making it possible to take part in class from any device.
