CLASS: SCENE STUDY - EXPLORING THE PRIMARY STAGES SEASON
In this new 10-week class, you will work on scenes by the 2018/19 Primary Stages Season playwrights. The Primary Stages Artistic Team (Casey Childs, Founder; Andrew Leynse, Artistic Director; and Erin Daley, Associate Artistic Director) will share their insight that comes from an intimate connection with these playwrights.
This class might be for you if you:
- Are committed to working on your craft and deepening your scene work skills using texts by of-the-moment playwrights.
- Are a self-motivated actor ready to dedicate out-of-class time to rehearse with your scene partner.
In this class you will:
- Make bold choices and ask the right questions to tackle the challenging demands of the form, structure, and language of playwrights currently being performed Off-Broadway. In the first class session, you will share monologues, discuss works and roles that excite you, and delve into the work of our Season playwrights. You will then spend three weeks per playwright, led by a member of our artistic team, with the work of A.R. Gurney led by Casey Childs, the work of Theresa Rebeck led by Andrew Leynse, and the work of Leah Nanako Winkler led by Erin Daley. Learn more about the season here.
- Explore the voices and style of each of these playwrights and, taking your personal goals into consideration, determine with Casey, Andrew, and Erin the scenes that best meet these goals.
- Work on 3 scenes over the course of the ten weeks. The hope is that everyone will get on their feet each class, but this needs to remain fluid as each process is different.
- Build on what your talent and intellect bring to your scene work in a room where you feel safe to make mistakes and make strong choices.
- Receive a complimentary ticket to A.R. Gurney's Final Follies, the first show of the Primary Stages Season.
By the end of this class you will:
- Have valuable rehearsal skills and be able to identify the core action and spine of a scene, and translate this into your character work and rehearsal process.
- Find the joy of discovery in the sometimes frustrating process of getting specific in your work.
- Develop a deeper understanding of the works of A.R. Gurney, Theresa Rebeck, and Leah Nanako Winkler by working with experts on their writing.
- Be eligible for consideration for Advanced Scene Study 1.
