Primary Stages is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit theater company and we rely on gifts from theater-lovers like you to continue to develop and produce engaging new works by American playwrights, train the next generation of theater artists, and ensure our work remains accessible to all New Yorkers. Ticket sales cover less than 50 percent of our annual expenses and we need your help to sustain our artistic and educational programs.
Here are some reasons why you should make a gift to Primary Stages today:
- We provide a long-term artistic home for established writers such as Charles Busch, A.R. Gurney, and David Ives, who return to Primary Stages time and time again with their latest works.
- Our Einhorn School for Performing Arts (ESPA) offers unparalleled opportunities for our student playwrights, directors, and actors to study with leading artists and build artistic networks that extend beyond the classroom. Our students have gone on to work professionally with Primary Stages and other prominent theater companies.
- We support playwrights at all stages of their artistic development--from aspiring writers crafting their first script in an ESPA class to graduate playwriting students in our MFA program with Fordham University to professional writers in our Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group.
- While many of our peers offer ticket discounts for New York City public school students, since 1995 Primary Stages has provided Student Matinees at no cost to schools or students. We are also the only theater company in New York to offer Pay What You Can performances for each of its shows.
We are proud to note that Primary Stages is well-managed and we keep our administrative expenses low: 81 percent of annual expenses underwrite program costs, while 19 percent support management, overhead and fundraising costs.
