"My students and I attended several student matinees at Primary Stages and the plays truly broadened their perspectives. While many of my students were at first reluctant to go to the city to attend a play, after the fact they all gave raving reviews and they expressed their gratitude. Thanks to your program, our students travel outside their comfort zone and as a result they have a richer, culturally diverse experience."
-Ruth Hopkinson, Teacher, Pathways to Graduation
Primary Stages understands the importance of the arts in students' education and the positive impact that seeing live theater can have on a young person's life. In 1995, to ensure that New York City public high school students have access to quality, live theater, Primary Stages established its Free Student Matinees Program. This program provides New York City public high schools with free student matinee performances for every Primary Stages production presented during the school year. Following each matinee, the cast returns to the stage to participate in a talk-back session with the students. These sessions encourage students to share their thoughts about the play with the cast, and hear the actors' points of view. Our playwrights often participate in these talkbacks as well, giving students the unique opportunity to interact with the author of the play.
Currently we invite, via email, high schools to attend student matinees on a first come, first served basis. If you are a teacher or principal and would like more information about joining our program, please contact Sue Breger at firstname.lastname@example.org.
