Dramaturgy as translated from the original German basically means "making the drama". It deals with an understanding, analysis of, and support of a structure and core movement in a work which makes it function to its optimum effect. Although there are specific positions in the theatrical field, people known as dramaturgs, the concept is more effective when used as a verb rather than a noun – when all the participants in the room have an understanding of the basic concepts and requirements, and can fully engage in the process.
Led by one of theater's most experienced and proficient dramaturgs, Morgan Jenness, this 5-week crash course in dramaturgy will look at its basic history and theories – from the hero's journey and Aristotle, through the well-made play and realism, and Brechtian theories to various alternative forms such as music composition and kishotenketsu. You will also study the construction of several classics and talk about the concepts of adaptation, and you will have the opportunity to present your own dramaturgical approach. You will also discuss the components and language of effective dramaturgical dialogue as well as what possibilities exist for dramaturgy within and beyond the theatrical landscape.
