When creating theater, especially in New York City, the obstacles to production can seem overwhelming. Financial, organizational, and even creative roadblocks will often stop great projects before they’re even started. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Moritz von Stuelpnagel—the Tony-nominated director of Hand to God and the Artistic Director of Studio 42 (NYC’s producer of “unproducible” plays)—will explore strategies to overcome these obstacles and use what you have to make the work you want. Over the course of this 2-day workshop, you will examine different tools for your directorial vocabulary, such as Non-Verbal Storytelling, Heightened Point of View, Physical Expressionism, and Incorporating Abstracted Objects, and discuss the principles of each. Then Moritz will arm you with exercises and texts, and get you on your feet to work and create pieces that encompass each of these tools. By the end of the weekend, you will know what it takes to be clever, creative, and courageous enough to make any project worth realizing come alive.
