Short plays require directors to think quickly. You've got to create an entire world, develop characters, and activate your story at lightning pace. This 1-day workshop with master short form storyteller and Tony-winning director John Rando will guide directors through this delicate process of economical storytelling.
In the weeks prior to the workshop, you will be given an assignment to direct a short play with your own actors. (We can help with creating your troupe, if needed.) You and your actors will come prepared to perform your piece on the day of the workshop. After an extensive (and critical!) discussion at the top of the day about the particulars of the form, your group will present, and John will give feedback. You'll then make adjustments on the spot, and John will give feedback on those adjustments, thus helping you develop an efficient language to use with actors in any room.
In addition to preparing your play ahead of time, John requests that you attend a performance of the Primary Stages production of Lives of the Saints – a collection of short plays by David Ives. This will serve as a launch pad for discussion on the form. Upon registration, you can arrange a date to book your ticket, the cost of which is covered as part of the workshop.
