What is it you want to say with that play? What perspective do you bring to the piece to make it uniquely yours? And, most importantly, why are you working on it in the first place? This 6-week seminar forces you to examine all of these questions in order to approach every play with the goal of telling this story right now and for this reason. With Tessa LaNeve, Director of ESPA and freelance dramaturg, you’ll look at work from Vince Gilligan to Marsha Norman and more, using plays, television series, and films to identify how storytellers leave no structural, presentational, or visual stone unturned. By charting the development of the hero and opponent, their manifestation within the physical world, and the moral arguments that explode for the audience by journey’s end, you will develop a scientific vocabulary and collection of tools to examine your plays, with the aim of developing confident, taut work and a strongly articulated vision for a rewrite.
This class is a perfect bridge for writers between our First Draft and Rewrite classes. It is also recommended for directors in pre-production and actors as they develop a new character.
