Using What You’ve Got – Directing Plays in Innovative Places: In New York City, traditional performance and rehearsal spaces are outrageously expensive. This 8-week, hands-on directing lab will teach you how to slough off the constraints of working in traditional spaces and give you the tools you need to make engaging, moving works of theater anywhere. Led by the team from Three Day Hangover (who are the co-creators of off-Broadway's Drunk Shakespeare and have staged immersive productions all over the city, from Tartuffe! at West Park Church to Drunkle Vanya's 6-month run at Tolstoy's Lounge), you will first discuss how site-specific and immersive theater works, the logistics of getting a space, resetting audience and actor expectations, and what the team has done, seen, and why it's worked. Then each week, class will be held in a specific, flexible, and possibly changeable location that will be anywhere but inside a classic theater, with spaces ranging from Central Park to Times Square to the Drunk Shakespeare lounge. By working with actors and staging both classic and contemporary pieces in unconventional locations, you will begin to discover the inherent theatricality in everything, expand your conceptions of what constitutes space, and explode your creativity in terms of where and how you can create theater. This class culminates in a public presentation of work directed by you and your classmates in a site-specific location.
