Led by Jennine Willett, co-artistic director of Third Rail Projects and co-creator of the immersive theater production Then She Fell, this 5-week, hands-on directing lab is designed to create work that engages the audience and blurs the fourth wall. This is an opportunity for directors who want to explore these new, popular forms while working on their feet in a collaborative environment. Over the first four sessions, you will learn the methods and tools developed by Third Rail Projects when making their experiential theater productions, and then you will apply these skills, step by step, to your own directing projects. The class culminates in a short scene that will be shared on the fifth meeting day.
Day 1, Creative Process: Expand upon one idea, collect reference and research materials, organize ideas, bounce ideas off of others, and develop a structural plan for how to build a piece from the ground up.
Day 2, Let's Play: Create games and improv structures to generate material, and explore character development and scenarios.
Day 3, Creating the Immersive Environment: How to adapt to an existing environment or design your own, and how to mock up spaces to play in.
Day 4, Crafting the Audience Experience: Explore ways to give the audience agency, invite them into the story, and implicate them in the narrative.
Day 5, The Presentation: Share your scene, receive feedback, and participate in a group discussion that reflects Third Rail's collaborative "think tank" environment.
