Artistic Director Scott Ellis wrote "[Gender-blind casting] requires bravery and imagination to see beyond the obvious, and look to the character traits an actor shares with a role, free from restrictions of gender. Four hundred years ago, audiences were asked to accept men playing women. It is long past time that we asked them to accept women playing men."
This class will give you the opportunity to explore roles designated for other genders, while staying true to your own gender identity. You'll discuss the challenges and opportunities of adapting a role to suit the unique qualities you bring to the table as an actor. Gender-blind casting for has become mainstream for Shakespeare, but this class will focus on taking modern texts and exploring them without the constraints of gender. Learn to make bold, imaginative choices and ask the right questions to tackle the challenging demands of a role that the playwright might not have originally considered for you. The small class size ensures that you will be on your feet each week, receiving individualized attention from Kimberly and also engaging in discussion about how gender is approached in more cutting-edge, contemporary plays, and how that compares to the scenes you're working on in class.
Your final class will be attended by a prominent NYC director or casting agent, who will provide invaluable insight and feedback. Previous guests for Acting classes have included Darragh Garvey (Casting Department, MTC), Marcia Milgrom Dodge (Tony-nominated Director and Choreographer, Ragtime on Broadway), Ken Rus Schmoll (Director, Iowa at Playwrights Horizons), and Ken Melamed (Agent/Partner, Bret Adams Agency).
Please note that final class guests are subject to change.
