By invitation only.
This class offers a select group of intensely dedicated ESPA actors the most challenging curriculum yet. The goal of this class is to push you through bad habits and mental roadblocks that are impeding your ability to reach your full potential as a performer. You will be required to have a heightened self-awareness of your own strengths and weaknesses, a deeply professional sense of how to create and develop a character, and be prepared to receive rigorous constructive criticism.
Under the guidance of director John Gould Rubin, this class will feel more like you are rehearsing scenes for a production than a class session. Rigorous outside rehearsal will be required so that you are prepared to work in class often and hard. You will be on your feet each week with John actively working moments to give you a sense of success, which you can then maintain as a standard in your work outside of class. If you can feel inspiration in your acting, John can help you discover individual ways to engender it each time you approach a character. Over the course of the class, you will work on three different scenes, with three weeks spent per scene, and engage in discussion with John about what to work on and how to make this choice.
For seriously dedicated actors only: actors will be required to commit at least 3-4 hours of rehearsal time a week to their scenes and come to every class off-book, with specific objectives and questions. Your final class will be attended by a prominent NYC director or casting agent, who will provide invaluable insight and feedback. Previous guests for Acting classes have included Darragh Garvey (Casting Department, MTC), Marcia Milgrom Dodge (Tony-nominated Director and Choreographer, Ragtime on Broadway), Ken Rus Schmoll (Director, Iowa at Playwrights Horizons), and Ken Melamed (Agent/Partner, Bret Adams Agency).
Advanced Scene Study 1 & 2 students may have special opportunities to connect and collaborate with our Advanced Playwriting students on in-class exercises and readings.
Please note that final class guests are subject to change.
